Reed's Bay Beach Park

Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, The Big Island’s two massive peaks, cut the island in half. The towering volcanoes direct the traffic of clouds high above the island, and they funnel all the rain clouds to the Hilo side of the island. This is the wet east side of The Big Island, and it stands in stark contrast to the hot lava fields of the hot, dry west coast which is anchored by Kona.

The Hilo side of the island is known for many things, including waterfalls, rivers and beautiful tropical flora. However, it is not known for its beaches. Much of the east side’s coastline is made up of black sand which is gritty and sharp underfoot. And Reeds Bay is no exception.

You’ll find this beach park right in the heart of Hilo Town. It’s easily accessible on foot, but you’ll have to wear sturdy shoes. While you will find some white sand at Reeds Bay, you’ll also find plenty of chunky coral and volcanic rock. The bay used to be a commercial port, so the coral heads in the water were dredged for small ships. The shattered coral has washed up on shore here to make a minefield.

The water here is usually calm, and, if you want to brave the sharp rocks and coral, you could go for a safe swim here. But many locals and tourists like to visit the nearby “Ice Pond” at the head of Reeds Bay for a refreshing swim. The natural pool is fed by natural underwater springs which brings unusually cold water to the surface.

You can use Reeds Bay as a pleasant little picnic spot. The bay is still home to small ships that like to anchor just offshore, and the boats are pleasant to watch. And the bay itself is just a short walk from most of Hilo’s coastline hotels.
