Baby Beach (Kauai)

The sparkling Pacific Ocean full of dolphins, turtles, seals and whales is actually quite dangerous. The ocean swells during the winter months to bring Kauai massive waves, strong surf and unexpectedly perilous conditions. This seasonal phenomenon is quite strong on the west side of the island, but it can also be seen on the north and south sides. Even the east side's Coconut Coast can feel the brunt of the tides during a storm or high swell.

This can be quite concerning for families looking to vacation on the Garden Isle, but you shouldn't let a few waves keep you off this tropical paradise. There are a few safe havens on the island where you'll find friendly waves year-round. Kauai's most popular sheltered beach is Lydgate Beach Park on the east side, but the south side features Baby Beach.

You can find Baby Beach near the south side's most popular strip of sand -- Poipu Beach. Poipu Beach itself has a sheltered little cove for the keiki's, but Baby Beach is even safer. The water off this little crescent-shaped strip of sand is ankle deep. It's literally suited for babies and their families.

And Baby Beach is easy to find. Just head west on Lawai Road, the same road that takes you to Spouting Horn State Park, from Poipu Beach until you reach Hoona Road. You can slip down to the beach between two residential homes. Look for the addresses 5142 and 5152 to find the little lane to Baby Beach.

You won't find the amenities of Poipu Beach down at Baby Beach, but that may be just the way you like it. A lack of amenities all but guarantees that there will be less of a crowd, and, for this reason, baby-less adults may want to think about heading down to this relaxing beach to escape the tourist crowds.

As an added bonus, the protective coral and volcanic rock barrier that makes the waters of Baby Beach so shallow attract hungry turtles, and the calm waters and soft sand bring in the lounging monk seals. Baby Beach is a great way to introduce your keikis to the wonders of the natural world. Just remember to keep your distance from Kauai wildlife. Local authorities enforce strict laws when it comes to touching Kauai's ocean friends, and the oils in your skin can degrade a turtle's shell.

There are no lifeguards on Baby Beach, but you shouldn't need one. However, as with any water-based activity on Kauai, you should always beware of the ocean's activities. Rough ocean currents can still affect your visit to Baby Beach. Check high and low tide times as well as swell conditions on the internet before heading down to this lovely little stretch of sand on Kauai's hot, dry and clear south coast.
