Aki's Beach can be found on Oahu island's West side and is situated near a residential neighborhood on its Western edge. This small beach provides the best chance to see sea turtles on Oahu; just head there if you want to find green sea turtles! Laniakea beach on Oahu's North shore does not always produce turtles as easily; Aki's Beach should be your go-to location if this is your aim - the rest depends entirely on luck!
After lunch we decided to drive out to Aki's Beach in the afternoon. Though far from Waikiki, it only took us an hour of driving time. Aki's Beach lies north of Makaha; once there, we made a left turn into its neighborhood and found parking later down the road due to many homes with warnings such as "Beware of Dog". In order to park safely there and walk back.
We approached the beach from two houses. As soon as we reached its edge, two massive sea turtles appeared! Lazily enjoying the sun glare while trying to get their bodies covered with hot sand! We stood about 15 feet away so as not to startle them or scare them; I brought along my zoom lens just so I could capture these great shots! There were also other people enjoying themselves at the beach as well!
After watching turtles taking sunbathe for approximately 30 minutes, one began moving slowly towards the ocean! He seemed too hot; taking two minutes for him to enter it and swim away!
Overall, this beach provides an enjoyable afternoon sun experience! Just be mindful to stay at a safe distance away from any turtles that might be present!
