Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is one of the most popular natural attractions in the world. Choose this self guided snorkel adventure at this natural crescent beach in the sunken caldera of an extinct volcano. Transportation and snorkel equipment is provided by vendor but food and beach supplies need to be rented or supplied by guests. There are three leaving and return times to choose from. For our guests needing assistance with a wheelchair or walker please inform agent at time of reservation. Please note only collapsible wheelchairs can be accommodated.
The bay is protected by the walls of volcanic formation and the waters are pure and clear, providing an ideal environment for fish and other marine life. The inner reef beach area is a long descent from zero to about 13 feet and perfect for children and casual snorkeling, while the outside reef portion is from 13 feet to 30 or more feet and good as a fun challenge for more advanced snorkeling.
Protection of The Bay
The City and County of Honolulu started to take necessary steps to protect the bay in 2002 the Marine Educational Center was built, consisting of marine displays of wildlife in the bay, an educational video theater, and other facilities. Watching the video is mandatory to keep visitors informed about the geological and historical background of the bay and at the same time to educate them about the importance of protecting Hanauma Bay.
